Their debut album, Nakshatra, the Sanskrit word for constellation, is a profound exploration of this dance between a collective and singular sound, bursting with energy, playfulness, and a cosmic gravitas.Īs a duo they have been artists-in-residence at Avaloch Farm Music Institute and Next Stage Arts Project, and have performed at National Sawdust, Ragas Live Festival, The Jazz Gallery, Bang on a Can, Benque Cultural Center, Sri Ramanjaneya Sangeetha Sabha, and Lyric Chamber Society of NY. Rooted in traditions of South Indian classical music, Western chamber music, and jazz, the duo is uniquely positioned to create a sound that feels ancient, orchestral, and contemporary or as The New Yorker put it “free-flowing and globe-spanning.” Combined with the duo’s fluency in improvisation, there is a clear architecture to their sound that still gives space for the two violins to be delightfully indiscernible and shine individually. Violinists Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy reimagine the potential of string chamber music with a unique sound both deeply intimate and cinematically expansive. Between tours and sessions he also teaches lessons on various string instruments to students of all ages. Young also hosts a monthly performance series (Heavy Air Happy Hour) with an emphasis on acoustic small group improvisation. He tours and records as a regular member of several bands and is in-demand as a bass player for live performance and studio sessions. They frequently collaborate with improvisers from across the city and create compositions that draw from their interest in sound, linguistics, and the body.Īndrew Scott Young is a bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and teacher based out of Chicago. He has also performed or recorded with Avreeayl Ra, Josh Berman, Jim Baker, Fred Jackson, Ed Wilkerson, Angel Bat Dawid, Jason Stein, and many more. Ishmael is leader or co-leader of a plethora of working projects including the KAH trio, Hearsay, Je’raf, Akjai, Archipelago, and Oido. Though varying drastically from group to group, a common thread in his work is the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements to create something new: both foreign and familiar. His work centers on exploring sound through improvisation, experimentation, composition, and collaboration, focusing on a wide array of idiomatic approaches in an ever-changing, always-growing list of projects informed by diverse influences. Ishmael Ali is a dynamic cellist, guitarist, improviser, and composer based out of Chicago. “Every year is a challenge”, Reid continues, “to put this program together as there are so many great players and only 6 slots available!
